M. A. Math Adopts Four Villages in Gujarat

The Twin City Times, Bombay
March 2001

The Mata Amritanandamayi Math founded by Her Holiness Mata Amritanandamayi with its international center at Amritapuri, Kollam, Kerala and various centers all over India has adopted a region of earthquake-devastated Gujarat. It plans to build nearly 2000 earthquake resistant houses using the latest technology. Planned schools and dispensaries in the villages of Jawahar Nagar, Modsar, Dagara, and Mokhana. The project is expected to cost more than thirty crores of rupees and will be completed within a year.

A team of 12 medical specialists which included one neuro surgeon, two orthopedic surgeons, one trauma care surgeon, on anesthetist, and one pediatrician along with two well equipped ambulances together with a staff of 80 volunteers from the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and research Institute (AIMS), Cochin were rushed to Anjar villages. This was followed by a batch of 100 staff and student volunteers from the Amrita Institute of Technology and Science (Engineering College), Amrita Institute of Management, Amrita Institute of Computer Technology located at Ettimadai, Coimbatore.

The team set 1200 tents in the above four villages for those displaced by the quake. The team headed by Br. Abhayamrita Chaitanya from Amrita Institute of Technology and Science visited nearly 25 villages including the border village of Khavda. A temporary hospital and 10 medical camps were set up so as to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to the needy. The sophisticated medical facilities set by the Math enabled the team of doctors to perform major operations, minor operations, and first aid including orthopedic care. During the 15 days stay, the medical team attended more than 10,000 cases including major/minor operations and treated around 2000 cases of infectious disease.

The most sophisticated ambulances consisting modern gadgetry moved in all the 25 villages with the doctors helping to pick up helpless victims for medical treatment in the temporary hospital as well as for sending serious cases to Naval Hospital INS Ashwini at Mumbai.

Since the local hospitals were totally devastated and part of the staff had died in quake, the presence of medical team from Mata Amritanandamayi Math was made possible to the wholehearted support received by the Holy Mother from India and abroad. The beauty and charm of the selfless love and service should not die away from the face of the earth. The world should know that a life of dedication is possible, that a life inspired by love and service to humanity is possible.
