Children's Education

Nagapattinam
June, 2005

M. A. Math adopted children orphaned by the tsunami in India, many of who came from Nagapattinam (the worst affected area in mainland India).

Today the villages in this area look very different - spurring with activity and life. More than 750 young students of Nagapattinam are given free education and any additional technical help after school hours. A few glimpses are given below:

Since the first week of June, free tuition classes are being provided in 10 centers around Nagapattinam.

Most of the classes are being held at the tsunami relief camps.

The classes are held after school hours, from five to eight in the evening.

These classes range from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Apart from classes on the school subjects, students are also given training in story telling, art, music, poetry recitation and essay writing.

Once a week, there are special sessions on leadership skills and confidence building.

Teach-while-you-learn: After their classes, senior students conduct tuition classes for the younger students. Many of these senior students attend computer classes run by M. A. Math.

There are also classes in Spoken English.

A painting competition was held for students attending the tuition classes.

There were three categories, based on age, in this competition. A total of 250 students took part in the art competition.
