Amma's Medical Camp
A community program to serve the sick free of cost
Amma’s Medical Camp conducted a health fair on March 8th
to serve an impoverished inner city neighborhood in Baltimore,
Maryland. Eighty percent of this community is said to be below
the Federal poverty line and contend with many health problems
including alcoholism and depression. Most of them have no health
insurance and end up going to the local hospital’s Emergency
Department to receive medical care.
Amma’s Medical Camp, comprised of medical and non-medical
devotees joined allied health care professionals in the area to
provide the community with medical care, social services and a
hot meal for the day. Some of the medical services rendered were:
Education for and Screening in hypertension, Diabetes, Audiology
and hearing disorders, Ophthalmology and eye conditions, Oral Cancer,
Asthma, Depression, Women’s Health and Nutrition. A workshop
on Stress Reduction was also provided. Social workers enrolled
the attendees into health plans or safety net programs and plugged
them into the various resources available to them. The attendees
who needed medical follow up were given proper referrals and appropriate
contacts. The Maryland Governor’s office sponsored bus passes
to be distributed to those without funds for transportation. Finally,
the attendees received a hot, delicious vegetarian meal. The attendees
and the local community organizers felt touched by the loving care
they received at the fair.
