Circle of Love Inside - tenth anniversary
During Amma's program in November 2001 in San Ramon, the first reply from an inmate in Illinois was received. It expressed strong faith in and love for Amma. Since then, that day, changeable like a moonstar birthday in the western calendar, has been counted as the birthday of Circle of Love Inside. Today there are about 200 letter writers and 400 inmates involved in the program. Over the years approximately 600 inmates who were served by Circle of Love Inside were released and returned to their families and communities, having heard about Amma. Through the generosity of the MA Center in San Ramon, the program has sent 1000 books about Amma to people in prison and to prison libraries.
Currently, the program is in contact with inmates in 23 states. Most letter writers are from the United States and there are also correspondents from Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, India, Israel, Singapore and Spain. Over the years, this seva has been available to devotees (and a few non-devotees) who do not live near satsang groups and to Deaf people for whom there is no access to satsangs (no sign language) regardless of location.
Today Amma's local satsangs in Victoria BC, Eugene OR, Santa Barbara CA, Austin and Dallas TX, St. Louis MO, Ann Arbor MI, Athens GA and San Diego, CA include Circle of Love Inside one of the satsangs regular sevas. The St. Louis (MO) satsang, in addition to maintaining a p.o. box for its members to share and writing to inmates, also has sent birthday cards to inmates.
Considering the huge number of people in prison in the US, Cirle of Love Inside has been a small, almost tiny program. We look forward to the program finding a home in more Amma satasngs and finding letter writers for the 100+ inmates who are waiting. In the past couple of weeks a mother wrote saying that she read about the program in her favorite newspaper, the Staten Island Advance. (!) She referred her son who is in prison in Florida.
In Amma's love,
