The gift of education
INSTITUTE OF PEOPLES' EDUCATION - JAN SHIKSHAN SANSTHAN (JSS),
a job training program launched by the Government of India, is
run by the M.A. Math in Idukki, Kerala and Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu.
More
than 100 courses in occupations varying from candle making to computer
science are offered through this program. The M.A. Math also encourages
JSS beneficiaries to participate in their communities and offer
selfless service.
Learning to read and write
In
a village called Idukki, the villagers and tribal people live amidst
serene and beautiful surroundings.
They
do not have an opportunity to come to the mainstream of urban life.
They endure all the hardships of disease and illeteracy without
much help. Their daily income is not consistent.
JSS
volunteers once again appear in this sad scene. Each volunteer
dedicates him or herself to one student. The students are taught
to read and write.
They
are all taught usually one alphabet per day.

They are given homework and practice lessons.
Many
women are taught by women volunteers.
Group
classes are also conducted to read.

The student villagers sit together and practice their reading skills
like in a classroom atmosphere under the supervision of a JSS volunteer..
JSS is such a wonderful program of the M.A.Math where men and women
are given hope and confidence to march forward in life, The work
of these volunteers goes a long way in making a positive change in
the lives of so many poor people.
