Our Story
Amma's first visit to Iowa in the summer of 2002 profoundly touched
all of us and motivated the local Satsang devotees to follow Mother's
selfless example of serving humanity in whatever way possible.
In our rural community, opportunities to serve are more limited
than in large metropolitan cities. A couple of years ago, we looked
to provide service or support locally, but nothing happened. However,
Mother's visit rekindled our enthusiasm and in August of 2002 the
Fairfield Mother's Kitchen project began and has continued since
that time.
Initially we cooked for the residents at various Salvation army
locations. However, many of these were several hours away and the
decision was made to focus on needs closer to home. Currently we
cook each week for the residents of the crisis center in Ottumwa
(twenty minutes away). This crisis center is the only one serving
many surrounding counties, including our own, and they have no budget
for food. Each week we bring them a prepared meal, pantry items
and other donations. We are often told how much the residents look
forward to seeing what we've brought for them.
