Knitting a Mountain of Hats and Scarves
A new seva (selfless service) was born at this year's Seattle retreat. Since January 2004, the Seattle
Satsang has been busy knitting afghans, hats and scarves for the needy. Their goal is to "knit a mountain
of hats and scarves" for the homeless who live in tents throughout Seattle. In order to achieve this
worthy goal, knitting seva was offered at the Seattle retreat this year. It became a popular seva
very quickly. Devotees were knitting everywhere it seemed; in the dining hall, on the college and
during bhajans and darshan.
"It is a meditative seva that allows me to chant my mantra while I work," one devotee said. By the end
of the retreat about a dozen hats and a dozen scarves had been lovingly knitted by devotees. As Amma
left the hall on Sunday afternoon, She blessed the mound of garments with a shower of flower petals.
"Premam, Premam (Love, Love)" she said holding her hand close to her heart, referring to the love that
was poured into this seva - ample reward for the selfless effort of the devotees.
