Love Simply Flows On...

July 18, 2005
New York

Someone once said that coincidences are nothing but small miracles. Perhaps it was one of these small miracles that found Carol, a waitress who lives in New York City, when she set out on a sunny summer afternoon with the intent of killing some time watching a movie. She rode the subway down to Manhattan, watched the latest blockbuster movie and instead of riding the subway train to Penn station, she decided to catch a breath of fresh air and walk it down. Somewhere along the way, she made a wrong turn- a left instead of a right- which, as it turned out, was the best turn she ever made… the right turn for life!

Carol found herself walking past the Manhattan Center where a bright orange poster of a dark-skinned woman seemed to beckon her; something told her that she had to go inside. Amma had just come into the hall and Carol had a chance to listen to the satsang given by an ashram resident… “Hell and heaven is what we make of life on earth; it is the attitude with which we perceive life on earth that makes it heaven or hell.” And he proceeded to illustrate this truth with a very interesting story.

Already familiar with Indian spirituality, Carol began to feel at home and started to feel that walking into the program hall right off the streets of Manhattan was the best decision she had ever made. Then Amma spoke, and one particular point seemed to resonate in Carol’s head…. “If you carry a worry long enough, it eventually gets to be too heavy a burden to bear … so my children, now that you are here, put down your burden of worries at least for the short time that you are here…” It suddenly dawned on her that although it is only little things that we worry about, if we constantly worry about them, we could make the worry itself our worst enemy.

Carol finally walked out of the hall, late in the night, excited yet content, after a beautiful darshan from Amma. With her went several books of Amma’s teachings, to read and contemplate at home.

What draws people like Carol to stumble across Amma? We may never know. All we know is that this has happened before. Some have a calling. Some are called. People wander in and bathe in the river of love that is Amma. Most find themselves moved by her life to do more for the lesser privileged around them. Some take a deeper plunge and dive into the depths of spirituality. The river of love simply flows on…
