A small gift from a big heart
Amma says that children are very pure and receptive. She often tells the parents to teach the values of love and service to their children through their own example. In this way children tend to learn very fast and these qualities become ingrained in them forever...
During the first morning program in Tokyo, a four-year-old girl named Momo went to Amma with a powder-blue plastic doll, which was the Japanese equivalent of a 'piggy bank'. Momo's mother explained that last year, before the Tokyo programs, their family had handcrafted 1000 origami cranes to present to Amma, an auspicious offering in Japanese culture.
This year, Momo expressed that she also wanted to give something special, something that Amma could use to help the poor and unfortunate people in the world. On New Years Day in Japan, it is customary for the adults to each give some coin-money to the children in the family, who in turn, happily spend their share on toys and sweets. Momo very thoughtfully saved her stash and waited eagerly for Amma's arrival to offer it to her.
During the darshan, it was easy to see that Amma recognized the innocence of Momo's effort to offer something special, and completely showered her with loving attention. Upon seeing the gleaming smile from ear to ear on Momo's face, it was apparent that the fleeting joy she would have received from the toys and sweets, would have paled in comparison to the infinite sweetness she received in Amma's lap that day.
